How much does my compulsory car insurance cover me if I cause an accident with damage to third parties?

From January 1st, 2008, the compulsory insurance covers up to 70 million euros per claim to meet personal injuries sustained in an accident, and up to 15 million euros as compensation for damage to property.

Remember that this is only the compulsory insurance, so if you are declared to be at blame for the accident and you don’t have any additional cover, any damage to you or to your vehicle will not be covered. Compulsory vehicle insurance only covers third parties such as injuries to the other driver or your respective passengers and damage to the other vehicle.

Of course, if your insurance is the “comprehensive full cover” type, you have nothing to worry about.
